The Hopkinton CC Charitable Foundation is proud to partner with Foundation for MetroWest to bring an 18 week skills based philanthropy program to high school students!  The program will commence this fall in Hopkinton and will teach students life long leadership skills including:

  • Deeper understanding of their own community and local needs
  • What it means to be a civic leader
  • Consensus building
  • Case making
  • Financial literacy
  • Public speaking

Students will work together to learn all aspects of philanthropy and award $10,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations.  The program will engage students in a process to help them define what philanthropy means to them; to gain a deeper understanding of their own communities and existing needs; learn about the kinds of questions to ask nonprofit organizations when evaluating their programs; understand how to operate as a board of directors, including the election of officers; and more.  The Youth in Philanthropy program also provides participants the opportunity to learn about the structure of a nonprofit organization and fundraising strategies.  This is a hands on experience that includes site visits and actual fundraising by the students, and will culminate with a grant ceremony and presentation of checks to selected grantees.

Grants will be made to organizations that align with the programs of the Hopkinton CC Charitable Foundation (Youth Development and Economic Assistance).  Open to students in grades 9-12 in the 2017-18 school year.  Spots are limited to 20 students.  The program is offered free of charge to inspire the next generation of philanthropists.

The Youth in Philanthropy program was launched in 1997 by the Foundation for MetroWest and remains one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the country.  Over $1 million has been granted by students to local youth development nonprofit organizations.
